Southport Pennant Team makes it back to back wins
The Southport Golf Clubs Men’s Open Pennant Team proved that their win in 2018 was no fluke when they again took out the Gold Coast District Golf Association’s Division One pennant title for 2019. This time they defeated finalists Sanctuary Cove by four matches to three.
Without current Australian Junior Champion, Elvis Smylie and also nationally ranked Seniors Champion Brad Dowling, the Southport men dug deep and won several tight matches which were ultimately decided on the 18th green on the beautifully presented Links Hope Island layout. The Sanctuary Cove team was also gallant in defeat pushing many of their tight losses right to the 18th green..
The match results in the Division One final were: Peter Lyon defeated Mitchell Varley 2/1; Lee Manning defeated Bailey Knoll 1 up; Zach Jansen defeated Paul Blake 1 up; Zach Ion went down to Norman Bonnet 1 down; Chad Baczkowski went down to Glen Thompson 1 down; Chris Melia went down to Charlie Hartwig 2 down and Travis Robie prevailed over Drew Herbert 1 up.
In the Division Two final also played also at Hope Island, Surfers Paradise proved too strong for the Hope Island team winning the pennant for 2019 by 5 matches to 2. The Surfers Paradise team went through the season undefeated and will seriously challenge the top teams when they play in next year’s top district pennant competition.
The match results in the Division Two final were: Terry Barr defeated Alex Whitely 3/2; Cody Davis defeated Jayden Situ 3/2; Trent Rose defeated Jayden Brooke 1 up; Taylor Barr defeated Richard Cooper 7/5; Billy Dowling defeated Simon Walliss 3/2; Blaze Chapman went down to Roger Worms 2/1 and Zane Pennycook was defeated by Sam Taylor 7/5. Surfers’ Captain Terry Barr acknowledged how satisfying it had been for him to see his son now progress to the top level of district golf.
