Queensland’s rising star secures Australia’s premier amateur title in dominant fashion.

Queensland’s Billy Dowling has stamped himself as one of Australia’s brightest amateur talents after claiming a commanding victory at the 2026 Australian Amateur Championship.

Dowling produced a superb final-round performance to finish 18-under par, including a brilliant closing 7-under 63, to secure the nation’s premier amateur title by five shots.

The victory caps a remarkable period of form for the Brisbane Golf Club member, who has been one of Australia’s most consistent performers on the world amateur stage over the past 18 months.

Heading into the final round, Dowling was already among the leaders, but a flawless display on the closing day separated him from the field. His final-round 63 featured a string of birdies and demonstrated composure and scoring ability that have become hallmarks of his game.

Building on strong international results

  • Runner-up – Scottish Men’s Open Amateur
  • Quarter-finalist – The Amateur Championship (England)
  • Top five finish – Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship
  • Silver medal with Australia – World Amateur Team Championship
  • Runner-up (leading amateur) – Queensland PGA Championship

A springboard to the professional game

The Australian Amateur has long been a launching pad for the country’s best young players, and Dowling’s emphatic victory positions him among the leading prospects in Australian golf. With his amateur career reaching its peak, the 2026 title is widely expected to be the final chapter before he takes the next step into the professional ranks.
